Acetyl-L-Carnitine

Acetyl-L-Carnitine has shown some usefulness as a neuroprotective agent and may be indicated for use in Alzheimer's disease, Down's syndrome, strokes, and for managing various neuropathies. Acetyl-L-Carnitine might also have anti-aging capabilities. The research concerning Acetyl-L-Carnitine's potential positive effect on sperm motility is still in the early stages but shows some promise.

Due to the lack of long-term safety studies, Acetyl-L-Carnitine isn't recommended for nursing mothers or women who are pregnant. Individuals with seizure disorders should only use Acetyl-L-Carnitine under medical advisement and supervision. Those taking Acetyl-L-Carnitine may experience mild gastrointestinal symptoms (abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting). When taking oral Acetyl-L-Carnitine, some individuals with Alzheimer's disease reported increased agitation. An increase in seizure frequency and/or severity has been reported in some individuals with seizure disorders taking Acetyl-L-Carnitine.
