Androstenedione

Supplemental Androstenedione may significantly increase blood testosterone levels and build muscle. Research is conflicting with the testosterone effect, but is unified in suggesting that extended use of Androstenedione could result in serious health risks.

Children, adolescents, nursing mothers, and women who are pregnant should avoid Androstenedione supplements. Information on the long-term safety of taking supplemental Androstenedione is unavailable. Adverse effects of exogenous testosterone in men include acne, behavioral changes, gynecomastia, testicular atrophy, and possibly an increased risk of prostate cancer. Adverse effects of exogenous testosterone in women include acne, hirsutism, deepening of the voice, amenorrhea, male-pattern baldness, clitoral hypertrophy, and coarsening of the skin. In adolescents, exogenous testosterone may lead to early closing of bone growth plates and a decreased height when they become adults. Other undesirable effects of testosterone include hepatic failure and increased platelet aggregation. Oral Androstenedione decreases HDL-cholesterol levels, which might increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
