Betaine and Betaine Hydrochloride

Betaine hydrochloride is used as a digestive aid in some individuals. Anhydrous Betaine has been helpful in the treatment of homocystinuria. Betaine might also be helpful in other conditions characterized by elevated plasma homocysteine levels. Betaine may be hepatoprotective in some circumstances, based on some animal research.

Nursing mothers and women who are pregnant should avoid using Betaine and Betaine Hydrochloride supplements. Individuals with gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, or peptic ulcer disease should avoid using Betaine Hydrochloride supplements. When using this supplement, occasional diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting have been reported. Concurrent use of Betaine and folic acid might be additive with regard to the possible lowering of serum homocysteine levels.
