Chondroitin Sulfate

Low-molecular-weight oral Chondroitin Sulfate might be used for the treatment and prevention of osteoarthritis, either by itself or in combination with a glucosamine supplement. Chondroitin Sulfate might be useful in atherosclerosis, but more research is needed.

Children, nursing mothers, and women who are pregnant should avoid using Chondroitin Sulfate due to insufficient safety data. Individuals taking warfarin and those with hemophilia should exercise caution in the use of Chondroitin Sulfate because of the theoretical possibility that it may have antithrombotic activity. Individuals who need to restrict their salt intake should use salt-free preparations if they use Chondroitin Sulfate. Side effects that have been reported are mostly of the mild gastrointestinal variety. No sulfa-allergic reactions or other allergic reactions have been reported. There are no known drug, herb, food, or nutrient interactions. Chitosan might form complexes with Chondroitin Sulfate decreasing its absorption. Chondroitin Sulfate should not be used concurrently with chitosan. This website is intended to educate and inform, and should not replace discussions with your doctor.
