Curcuminoids

 
The Curcuminoids might have anticarcinogenic, antifungal, antiviral, anti-atherosclerotic, anti-inflammatory, and immune-modulating effects. They also appear to help detoxify some drugs and other chemicals. Curcuminoids might help prevent cataracts and ameliorate chronic anterior uveitis. Curcuminoids might help to speed wound healing. Claims that Curcuminoids may be useful in gall bladder disease are poorly supported.


Nursing mothers and women who are pregnant should avoid Curcuminoid supplemention. Individuals with gastroesophogeal reflux disease (GERD) and those with a history of peptic ulcer disease should apply caution in the use of Curcuminoid supplements. Curcuminoids might have antithrombotic activity in some people. Individuals on warfarin or anti-platelet medicines should be cautious in their use. Cancer patients should only use Curcuminoid supplements under medical supervision. Curcuminoid supplements must be taken with food. Curcuminoids might cause gastritis and peptic ulcer disease if taken without food. Curcuminoids might cause gastric irritation and ulceration if taken with an empty stomach. Adverse reactions of supplements principally comprised of Curcuminoids are mainly gastrointestinal. There is a report of transient giddiness following Curcuminoid ingestion. In animal studies, Curcumin was found to enhance the antitumor effect of cisplatin against fibrosarcoma. It was also found to lower the clastogenic effect of cisplatin. Also in animal studies, Curcumin was found to decrease the nephrotoxicity due to doxorubicin and to lower chromosomal aberrations due to bleomycin. Curcuminoids might enhance the action of anti-platelet medicines. Curcuminoids might also enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. Bromelain is reputed to enhance the absorption of Curcuminoids but there is no credible documentation of this. Piperine might enhance the absorption of Curcuminoids.
