D-Ribose

D-Ribose might have protective effects in cardiac ischemia. Claims that D-Ribose is an exercise performance enhancer aren't substantiated by credible evidence. D-Ribose might be helpful in some rare genetic diseases, such as adenylosuccinase deficiency and myoadenylade deaminase deficiency.

Nursing mothers and women who are pregnant should avoid supplemental D-Ribose. Supplemental D-Ribose might cause elevation in uric acid levels and hypoglycemia. Individuals with elevated uric acid levels and hypoglycemics should apply extreme caution in D-Ribose use. Individuals with gout should avoid supplemental D-Ribose. Individuals with diabetes should apply extreme caution in the use of D-Ribose. Diabetics who decide to try D-Ribose must be under a physician's supervision and have blood glucose levels closely monitored and their antidiabetic medications appropriately adjusted, if necessary. Reported adverse reactions include diarrhea, headache, hyperuricemia, hyperuricosuria, hypoglycemia, and nausea.
