Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice

Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice has been helpful in the management of duodenal and gastric ulcers.

Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice should be avoided by children, nursing mothers, and women who are pregnant due to a lack of long-term safety studies. Individuals with arrhythmias, congestive heart failure, hypertension, low potassium and/or magnesium levels, and water retention should discuss the use of Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice with their doctors and should be certain that any Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice they use is free of glycyrrhizinic acid. There are significant adverse effects with licorice extracts containing glycyrrhizinic and glycyrrhetinic acid when used for the management of peptic ulcer disease, including arrhythmias, cardiac water retention, congestive heart failure, headache, hypertension, hypokalemia, and hypomagnesemia. Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice should be free of these side effects. There are some reports of gastrointestinal side effects, such as diarrhea and nausea. The excretion rate of nitrofurantoin was found to be significantly higher in patients receiving the medicine along with Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice. This website is intended to educate and inform, and should not replace discussions with your doctor.
