DL-Phenylalanine

DL-Phenylalanine may be useful in some individuals with depression. DL-Phenylalanine might also have some analgesic properties. It hasn't shown any benefit in the treatment of attention deficit disorder.

Nursing mothers and women who are pregnant should avoid DL-Phenylalanine supplementation. Tardive dyskinesia is reported to be exacerbated after ingestion of DL-Phenylalanine by schizophrenics. Individuals with schizophrenia should apply extreme caution in the use of DL-Phenylalanine. Individuals with hypertension should apply caution in the use of DL-Phenylalanine. DL-Phenylalanine will exacerbate symptoms of phenylketonuria if used by phenylketonurics. Concurrent use of DL-Phenylalanine and non-selective MAO inhibitors (including pargyline HCl, phenelzine sulfate, and tranylcypromine sulfate) might cause hypertension. DL-Phenylalanine and the selective MAO inhibitor selegiline might have synergistic antidepressant activity if used concurrently. DL-Phenylalanine might potentiate the tardive dyskinesia side effects of neuroleptic drugs if used concurrently.
