Huperzine A

Huperzine A has potent pharmacological effects and should only be used under medical supervision. Huperzine A might have some effectiveness in Alzheimer's disease and age-related memory impairment. It has also been used for fever treatment and some inflammatory disorders.

Children, nursing mothers, and women who are pregnant should avoid Huperzine A. Individuals with asthma, cardiac arrhythmias, and seizure disorders should avoid Huperzine A due to possible adverse effects. Individuals with inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel disease, and malabsorption syndromes should also avoid Huperzine A. Adverse effects reported with Huperzine A include blurred vision, diarrhea, dizziness, fasciculations, nausea, and sweating. Possible adverse effects include arrhythmias, bradycardia, bronchospasm, cramping, hypersalivation, increased urination, seizures, urinary incontinence, and vomiting. Using Huperzine A with the acetylcholinesterase inhibitors donepezil or tacrine might produce additive effects. Other acetylcholinesterase inhibitors include neostigmine, physostigmine, and pyridostigmine, and using these agents with Huperzine A might also produce additive effects. Use of Huperzine A with cholinergic medicines, such as bethanechol, might produce additive effects. Use of Huperzine A with CDP-choline, choline, phosphatidylcholine, and L-alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine may produce additive effects hypothetically.
